From the time I was employed by the then NSW State Pollution Control Commission in 1977, I have been designing, implementing and managing monitoring programs to determine the impact of human and industrial activity on the aquatic & marine environments.
With the SPCC, I was responsible for developing, implementing & managing a program to determine "toxic chemicals" (the heavy metals and radionuclides) in the Georges River / Woronora River / Cooks River / Botany Bay system. This report was issued by the SPCC in September 1979 as ISBN 0-7240-4267-9.
My program had to be co-ordinated with other programs determining dissolved oxygen, turbidity and sewage contamination levels.
At Woodlawn Mines, I had to develop monitoring programs to determine the offsite contamination levels arising from surface water runoff and ground water seepage. This had to be done in such a way as to maximise the detection capabilities against the background of an operating mine with little pre-existing water quality data - despite the fact that the ore body had been located primarily by detecting anomalous levels of heavy metals in stream sediments in the vicinity.
Contaminated surface water arose from ore and waste rock stockpiles, while contaminated ground water arose from seepage built into tailings and other contaminated water collection dams, the seepage being designed in as a safety measure for the dams.
While with the ACT Parks & Conservation Service, I was responsible for designing and implementing monitoring programs to determine the impact of the aerial application of fertilisers & weedicides, within the operating forests of the ACT, on Canberra's water supply. Additionally, I was responsible for designing and managing the sediment level study in Lake Burley Griffin.
While with the Department of Environment & Planning in Tasmania, I instigated the response to (and wrote the report into) an incident which resulted in the deaths of large numbers of trout in the Pieman River (on the West Coast of Tasmania) in April 1990. The internal report to the Minister in May 1990 outlined the investigations into the cause of death.
Also, I was responsible for instigating a follow-up investigation into heavy metal contamination in the River Derwent in 1991. This investigation followed an extended period of improved environmental performance at a major water contamination source on the River and contrasted the findings to those of an earlier investigation carried out in the 1970s.
Wide experience of water pollution issues; Excellent understanding of the uses of indicator species in contaminant monitoring & detection; Experience in fresh, marine, estuary & ground water systems Mapping capability
