Catchment Management

During my employment with the ACT Parks & Conservation Service, some of the most modern methods for soil erosion control were instituted to control runoff from urban development sites as well as the operations of ACT Forests. Additionally, Canberra had, at that time, some of the most stringent measures in place to prevent litter reaching the urban lakes - Burley Griffin, Ginninderra and Tuggeranong - and, subsequently, the Murrumbidgee River.

A large part of my work while with the Service, was to determine the effects of soil conservation works carried out in the Murrumbidgee & Molonglo River catchments by the Soil Conservation Service of NSW as part of a tri-partite agreement to protect Lake Burley Griffin from upstream siltation.

My responsibilities at the Woodlawn Mine just outside of Canberra included the planning for the ultimate rehabilitation of the open pit, together with the rehabilitation and revegetation of existing salinisation and erosion, as well as disturbed areas resulting from exploration and development activities.
